Shiitake

 

Shiitake: The name originates from the Japanese words ‘Shii’ meaning wood and ‘Take’ meaning mushroom. It is the second most consumed mushroom in the world with an estimated worldwide production of over 250,000 tonnes per year. This species originates from China and cannot be found growing wild in Europe. They have been grown commercially in the Far East for over 3000 years!!

Appearance: These mushrooms have dark brown umbrella-shaped caps with pure white gills.

Characteristics: They can be eaten raw, in which case you will detect a faint peppery bite, but they are generally cooked. Their slight slippery texture particularly enhances Chinese and oriental dishes.

Shelf Life: Shiitake have a shelf life of 7-10 days when kept refrigerated.

Packed: Shiitake Mushrooms are packed in punnets or trays.

How to Cook: Shiitake can be sautéed, broiled, baked, grilled, stir fried or sliced thin and used raw in salads. Its meaty flavour enhances almost any dish.
