Welcome to The Mushroom Basket!

INTRODUCTION:

Brothers Tim & Simon have been growing Exotic Mushrooms for 22 years, continuing their family's tradition of growing mushrooms over the last 50 years.

The brothers have pioneered the introduction of exotic mushrooms in the UK, and continue to diversify with new types of mushroom. Tim & Simon's talent lies in being able to recreate the conditions required to grow mushrooms that are found wild in other parts of the world, such as the Far East. Their efforts have enabled the British public to appreciate the diversity of mushrooms without having to travel around the world - or more importantly in an era of "carbon-footprint" awareness - without the mushrooms having to be imported from around the world! - The taste of the Orient direct from Leicestershire!

OUR FARM:

Lowerfields Farm, Packington near Ashby de la Zouch is situated in the heart of the National Forest, in rural Leicestershire. The mushrooms grow in small growing houses with different temperature, humidity and straw/hay mix depending on the type of mushroom. Eventually the mushrooms are handpicked, stalks hand-trimmed before being distributed same-day to supermarkets, restaurants, etc.

THE MUSHROOM BASKET:

This is our farm shop. At The Mushroom Basket it's possible to buy mushrooms so fresh, they're still growing!

Mushrooms are both delicious and versatile. They contain almost no fat, but are a valuable source of dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Our team are on-hand to let you sample and decide which mushrooms you require, and provide advice on using the mushrooms. Apart from "common" mushrooms, you can view exotic mushrooms normally available by clicking below.

Additionally, we supply a range of mushroom related products such as recipe books, woodturnings, sauces & pickles, cakes and conserves.

Livesey Brothers fresh free-range eggs are also available from the shop, which we are confident you will find are the tastiest you've ever tried!

BEEF & LAMB:

Livesey Brothers beef & lamb is all bred and reared by them on the fields surrounding Lowerfields Farm.

The beef cattle are all Pedigree Herefords. They are fed on a diet of pure grass - nothing else whatsoever, (there are no pesticides, chemicals or fertilisers on our farm).

Once slaughtered, all animals are then hung on the bone to mature for a MINIMUM of 5 weeks, and then butchered in our own on-farm butchery.

LOWERFIELDS FARM KITCHEN:

We are currently building our own kitchen on the farm that will be used to create culinary masterpieces, not surprisingly along the theme of Beef, Lamb and Exotic Mushrooms.

We will not be mass-catering here. Instead we will be creating seasonal dishes for the discerning customer. You will be able to discuss your requirements with our chef who will be more than happy to prepare and cook dishes especially for you.

We also hope to run cookery courses where you will have the opportunity to try some really exciting recipes using our own produce.

Watch this space as we will keep you updated with the progress of the kitchen.

OUR FARMING ETHOS:

We offer complete traceability, as all the produce is ours! We can assure customers that products are grown without the use of pesticides, fertilisers and chemicals.

We farm in harmony with the environment. Nothing is wasted. For instance, spent compost is ploughed back into the soil to maintain a nutrient balance by revitalising subterranean wildlife, such as earthworms, bacteria and humus.

Sustainability is a key word!

Our team assures you of the origin and integrity of all our products, to give you peace of mind that you're eating only the most natural, fresh and tasty produce.

We are also strong believers in the assistance this type of shop gives the local economy, and helps to reduce the huge distances some supermarket products have to travel - so called "food miles" - which have a huge environmental impact.
